Cumulus Helsinki: Northern World Mandate

The Cumulus Conference will follow the overall theme of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 theme “Open Helsinki – Embedding Design in Life”. The conference will dig in the theme by asking questions like how design knowledge can support public services in the development of open, participative city environment.

Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture will host the Cumulus Helsinki 2012 conference in May 24-26. Over 300 conference guests worldwide are expected to join the conference.

Cumulus Helsinki 2012 will be an open and wide forum inspiring all Cumulus members and interest groups into lively discussion and exchange of ideas of how design tools can improve the development of cities and the quality of life.

Academic board members

Members of the academic board are Professor Kari Heiskanen (material technology), Dr. Mikko Jalas (business economics), Dr. Tuuli Mattelmäki (industrial design), Professor Teemu Mäki (fine arts), Professor Eija Nieminen (sustainable innovation) and Professor Maija Rautamäki (landscape architecture).


Top-level educational institutions from around the world

Cumulus is an international association of universities and colleges of art, design and media. It has 176 member universities representing 44 countries worldwide. Twice a year, a member institution hosts a 3-day Cumulus conference. The conference serves as a platform to meet people from all over the world and over all disciplines and to share new ideas and research findings.
